Depois da Chuva

After the Rain (temporary title, Feature film)

After twenty years of dictatorial regime, Brazil is feeling strong pressure from the people who demand direct presidential elections and the end of the military dictatorship. 1984 will be a turbulent year, marked by dreams and political defeats.

At the same time, Caio, 16 years old, goes through the transition from teenager to the beginning of his adult phase, a period marked by his first love, a strong wish to fight for what he believes and for liberty. The discoveries during his late teenage years have amounted to a great deal thanks to the connection with the historic moment of the country. Caio will feel as the character of a unique instance lived to the fullest.

Background of the script

After the Rain is set in 1984, during the Diretas-Já (Direct Elections Now) movement. This movement demanded direct presidential elections for the country and the election of Tancredo Neves, first civilian president after 20 years of military regime. That year, the population, especially the young people, were overtaken by the feeling that the political and social course could be improved. Nonetheless, the defeat of the Diretas-Já movement and the death of Tancredo Neves, even before he took office, meant the abrupt termination of the transformation about to take place.

The environment and atmosphere of the time will come into play through Caio, the main character of the story. Young, 16 years old, he participates in the creation of the Student Association during a time in life, which is marked by the experience of first love, amorous deception, and a strong wish to fight for his believes and for liberty.

After the Rain illustrates a subtle relation between Caio’s life and the political moment the country is going through. To talk about Caio and the events he is going through at school, is to talk about Brazil during that time. It is important to say that the national fictional film industry has produced many films about the dictatorial period (1964-1984), however, nothing about the turbulent transition period to democracy (1984).

Twenty-five years after that period, it is time for a film, which depicts the atmosphere of that period in order to promote a deeper reflection about the time.
